8th REL – Iceberg Analogy of Culture
Directions: On your worksheet, please complete and fill in the aspects of surface culture and deep culture that have influenced you in your life/upbringing. (WORKSHEET DUE TUESDAY 10/28)
SAMPLE:
Mrs. Dyogi – Philippines, Spain, China, United States, Catholic Religion
SURFACE CULTURE (all that can be seen, touched, and heard)
- food – adobo, pancit/chowmein, lumpia/eggrolls + taste for international foods
- music – Christian music/praise and worship
- language – English, some Spanish, little Tagalog
- dress – fairly conservative (don’t really like to stand out)
- traditions – gathering with family and friends for holidays, going to Mass on special days (birthdays/anniversaries)
DEEP CULTURE (values, attitudes, beliefs, myths)
- appreciation for faith and moral principles
- value for higher education
- commitment to family
- disciplined work ethic (willing to work hard and to make sacrifices to do well)
- “fighting spirit” (to do what is right and challenge societal norms, when necessary)
- dutiful obedience (following the rules when there is good purpose behind them)
- respect for elders and their experiences
- openness to serve others and forgive those who hurt me
- preference for chivalry in courtship (the man should be the one to win the woman’s heart, not the other way around)
