REL Ch 4 Spell/Vocab Terms – Part 2
Please copy the following words and definitions (Due THURSDAY, JAN. 15):
- Sadducees - political leaders, mostly priests, who did not believe in resurrection
- Sanhedrin - seventy-one Jewish men in Judea who acted as a supreme council
- Zealots - freedom fighters who sometimes used violence to overthrow Rome’s control of Palestine
- Essenes - men who usually lived in desert communities in order to live a pure life
- Temple - the symbol of the Jewish faith; the only place where sacrifices were made
- Synagogue - a town center of prayer, education, and social life; the scrolls of the Torah were read and preached there
- Torah - the first five Books of the Bible; also known as the Pentateuch or the Law
- Sabbath - the Lord’s day; a day of strict rest
- Aramaic - the language of Jesus
- Shema - the main commandment of the Jewish people, which was prayed daily
