REL Ch 4 Spell/Vocab Terms – Part 2

Please copy the following words and definitions (Due THURSDAY, JAN. 15):

  1. Sadducees - political leaders, mostly priests, who did not believe in resurrection
  2. Sanhedrin - seventy-one Jewish men in Judea who acted as a supreme council
  3. Zealots - freedom fighters who sometimes used violence to overthrow Rome’s control of Palestine
  4. Essenes - men who usually lived in desert communities in order to live a pure life
  5. Temple - the symbol of the Jewish faith; the only place where sacrifices were made
  6. Synagogue - a town center of prayer, education, and social life; the scrolls of the Torah were read and preached there
  7. Torah - the first five Books of the Bible; also known as the Pentateuch or the Law
  8. Sabbath - the Lord’s day; a day of strict rest
  9. Aramaic - the language of Jesus
  10. Shema - the main commandment of the Jewish people, which was prayed daily
